Billie's Not Sad

Perspective

I wasn't even born until 1971, so I had no prior knowledge about Lady Day. No one in my houshold ever listened to her music. When we had get togethers with my family (which was just about all the time) we would listen at Teddy Pendergrass, The Ojay's, Marvin Gaye, Roger Trautman and Zapp, The Gap Band, BeeGees, etc. I now have a special place for that kind of music in my heart and I am even a hip hop fan.

I don't really like jazz music, but one day I was going through my great grandmothers things, because she had passed away of cancer. I came across this Billie Holiday record and I took it home and played the record. I didn't know anything about Ms. Holiday except from what the movie (Lady Sings the Blues) potrayed. I sat back and just listened and this woman just blew me away.

I knew of her life of misery from the movie, but I know movies don't display it all, if even the real thing. As I sat back and listened to her sing I realized that she is not at all sad when she sings. As a matter of fact, I believe her heart is at peace only when she sings. It just sometimes feels good to get it out. For some reason as young as I am I just cannot get enough of Ms. Day. She feels me up and I sometimes know exactly how she feels. So just go ahead Ms. Day and do your thing.
