Mahalia Jackson was and still is the "Queen of Gospel". There will never ever be a voice like that again. She had the type of voice that would give you goose bumps and make you feel tingly.
I'm 16 years old and I've been loving Mahalia every since I was 6 years old. I wasn't fortunate enough to meet Mahalia or attend her concerts, but I know people who have and they said she would sing song after song and when the spirit got hot so did she.
I have a tape of her last tour before her death and she got ugly for the Lord. Sweat pouring down her face, hair messed up, her holy dance moves, and her facial expressions. That's what I like about her. She was a very pretty woman, but when it came time to sing she got ugly and gave it her all.
Mahalia Jackson is a role model to me and I'm sure to others because she is the prime example of what a person should be. She lived her life as a Christian should and she hoped that she could make a difference in the world. Mahalia hoped that through her music she would break racial barriers and increase peace. I was told that she would do anything for anyone.
Mahalia sang so many songs that touched hearts , made us shout (dance), and made us think very hard. I love all of Mahalia's songs but among some of my favorites are "Elijah Rock," "Didn't It Rain," "Let There Be Peace," "The Lord's Prayer," and "A City Called Heaven."
May she Rest In Peace. Mahalia and her music will live on forever.
