A Man for All Seasons
Perspective
In my eyes, Jester belongs in the top ten names of the 20th century. I'm so pleased that I was referred to this wonderful website. At this writing, February 29, 2000, I am close to finishing a one hour documentary video on the life and contributions of Jester Hairston entitled, "Jester! The Amen Man". I probably know more about Jester Hairston than anyone living today. I say that humbly and proudly. Even after spending much of my time and resources since 1993 to produce this tribute, I can't begin to do justice to the memory of this humble man. Superlatives fall short. I documented many of the events that the other contributors have shared. I 've collected film, radio, printed material from nearly a century of living. I have home videos of many concerts, much like he has done since the 1950s to audiences all over the world. Everywhere I go, I have met so many people with similar memories. "He came to my school", echoes across this nation. His influence for good will resonate with all he touched through all time. I contend there is not another soul who has done more to spread and popularize the spiritual to more people than Jester. His use of the mass media, particulary, radio and feature film, his 100 + arrangements, his world-wide travels over a half century help to support this point. You would be astounded at what he accomplished in his career in Hollywood. Yet, in my struggles to get this aired, so many in the media have tried to concentrate on his media exposure and tell me, " well, he isn't prominant enough a name for us to bother about". They completely miss the point - Jester was not concerned about making a name for himself as a media star, he spent his life with the constant desire to teach others about his cultural heritage and the lessons of love. tolerance and brotherhood. His love of God and of all men and women as his brothers and sisters was pre-eminant. That was what he was. His media career adds a great deal of entertainment and interest to the story but it was not the motivating force in his life. It helped him earn a living to do what he really loved. He is a largely forgotton man in the 20th century. I hope to change that. When the curtains of time close and the last act has been played out on this earth, when the final bows are called for, we will finally see Jester in his rightful place in history. I hope I can be part of his heavenly choir.
I would very much like to hear from others their memories of this remarkable man. I hope to edit his diaries, letters and countless articles, interviews into a comprehensive biography. His writings are what best shine the light on the magnanimity of his character. Your input and stories would be greatly appreciated. Please write to [email protected]
