$1.65

Perspective
Mary McLeod Bethune Mary McLeod Bethune

With a $1.65 and five students, this remarkable woman built one of the finest institutions for Negro education anywhere. The original school was only a four-room shanty furnished with stuff she scoured from the city dump. She sold pie and ice cream to raise money for the school, and her students sang at different events.

Mrs. Bethune was tireless in her quest to get funds from various philanthropic organizations and individuals who had an interest in her school. Bethune-Cookman College in Florida was built with hard work and determination during segregation. Bethune built an institution that grew into a college that turns out exceptional students each year.
