The gaity from the 60's turned into something different in the 70's. The United States celebrated its 200th birthday. The political scene was engaged in battles on many fronts. The war on poverty began during the Johnson Adminstration. Yet, hunger and homelessness still existed in all of the major cities and across the country. A war being waged on drugs soon made headlines, for this one, there didn't seem to be an end in sight.

The shooting war in Southeast Asia continued. Vietnam left us with haunting memories of our young who died there. On campuses throughout the country demonstrations and protests against not only the war, but over civil rights issues dragged on. The great "Silent Majority" was called upon to protest against the anti-war movement.

The television mini-series "Roots" aired over eight nights and 51% of televisions looked on each night. 80 million people watched each night.

Women's struggle for equal rights reached a proportion unparalleled since 1919. They marched for their rights in the workplace, the right to drink in the bar of their choice, and to know why when they became pregnant they had to forfeit their jobs. 18-year olds are given the right to vote.

The 70's witnessed the resignation of a United States President and Vice President. President Richard Nixon said:"I'm not a crook." The Watergate Scandal brought the Presidency to a never before low. Gerald Ford made history by not ever having to run for President nor vice president. The #1 G-man died, J. Edgar Hoover. Hoover was the Director of the FBI for 48 years...The decade started with President Richard Nixon in office and ended with President Jimmy Carter.
