My first encounter of Dorothy Dandridge was from the movie Carmen Jones. My only previous knowledge of her was that she was this incredibly beautiful Black actress Of The 1960's, who broke down color barrier's in the movie industry. After seeing Carmen Jones, I Thought The movie was great, but I didn't think the role suited the image I had of her. I later read her bio, which tells how she hated doing such a role because people would only see her in the years ahead as "Carmen".
What I admire about her is how she portrayed a character that was so opposite from her own, and succeeded in portraying that role to the fullest.
Since then i've paid my own personal tribute to her by keeping her memory alive by collecting her filmology, images and articles on her. Dorothy will always be remembered in my heart as a young gifted Black actress who not only opened doors for other young black actresses today, but she also leaves an imprint on the hearts and minds of many that we only scratched the surface of her other untapped talents.
