Rites of Passage

Perspective
Berry Gordy, Jr.

Motown was the sound that Black kids counted on and looked to for "that" sound. With a few thousand dollars, faith and lots of hard work, Berry Gordy entertained a generation like no other Black entrepreneur.

Motown gave us a sound and style that no other record company has ever matched. When I hear an old Motown song, I can still sing all the words. In school when we listened to the Miracles, Gladys Knight and The Pips, the Four Tops, Stevie, Marvin, Smokey, it was like family.

Berry Gordy brought a generation of young Black kids something we identified with and could call our very own. I can only say thank you for giving so much music to grow by.
