Black Hollywood

Perspective
Sidney Poitier

Sidney Poitier was the third Black person to receive an Academy Award, and the first Black man to receive the award for Best Actor. The movie was Lilies Of The Field. I can still see Sidney's brilliant smile as he accepted his award. Sidney was the first Black man to receive his award on national television. It was especially a proud moment for the Black community.

Sidney helped change many stubborn racial attitudes that had persisted in this country for centuries. He built the bridges and opened the doors for countless artist in succeeding generations. As an actor, he stood for excellence and for hope.

The two other actors who received Academy Awards before Sidney were Hattie McDaniels and James Baskett.

In 1939, Hattie McDaniels (1895-1952) was the first Negro to receive this prestigious award. Miss Daniels received her award for Best Supporting Actress in the movie, Gone With The Wind. Miss Daniels was given her award back stage at the official awards ceremonies.

In 1947, James Baskett (1904-1948) was given a Special Academy Award for his part in Song Of The South. Baskett was the second Negro to receive an Academy Award. Baskett was unable to attend the premiere in Atlanta because he was unable to get accommodations. Baskett was the "first live actor" ever hired by Disney.
