The Eighties

The Plastic Generation

There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everbody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind.........Neil Young"

In the 80's the baby boomers had come of age. Hippies traded in their long hair for business suits and nine to five jobs. The sixties love children had settled into careers, homes and families. Who carries money? Why not just charge it.

In the 60's there was a song asking, "where have all the flowers gone"? "Suddenly it is the autumn of my life, leaves are falling all around me. As I look back there are some things and people that are now forever a part of me. How quickly my youth passed. I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up."

IBM came out with the first generation of the home computer. Cable TV was invading the airways, and MTV put faces on the sounds of the day. Celebrity endorsements became quite lucrative; it seemed every athlete was selling shoes. Iron Mike Tyson is heavyweight champion in the boxing area. People like him and are paying to watch this young man.

"Some say I'm a dreamer", sang John Lennon, it is hard to Imagine the music of my day without John Lennon. Lennons's gift of music will be remembered for a long time. Lennon's music died when he was shot four times from behind. Another of the people's heroes, Joseph Louis Barrow, the Brown Bomber, former heavyweight champion of the world was laid to rest at Arlington cemetary. Louis fought 71 fights and lost 3 with 54 knockouts. Louis put his career on hold to serve in WWII. He was widely respected by all Americans.

Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday becomes a national holiday during this decade. A tribute to our fallen sons and daughters was erected. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was dedicated with more than 58,000 names listed on the memorial wall. War is still making money.

Nature was active in the 80's. After 123 years, Mt. St. Helens erupted, spewing ash and debris and destroying everything in its path. In 1986, Halley's Comet streaked through the sky--an event that happens only once every 72 years.

With the introduction of crack cocaine, the mind-expanding drug experience of the sixties evolved into destructive drug addictions in the eighties. Is the war on drugs a cruel joke? America's poverty level reached it's highest since the 1960's. The ranks of the homeless is growing, it hasn't been this high since the Depression era.

Free love now can come with a price tag--AIDS--and it can take your life. Gangs started to replace the family, and our kids began killing each other for a little sport.

Our schools are now manned by police and metal detectors, and Johnny still can't read. Is God dead?
