
Gospel comes to O.L.G.
Perspective
Jester Hairston electrified my elementary school when he appeared before an assembly of the whole school in 1966. At the time in this little school in the San Fernando Valley there were zero African American students. Mr. Hairston had everyone singing, rolling in the aisles with his poems "The bedbugs of San Francisco" etc. It was a luminous moment.
