I had the unique lifetime experince of singing in a Jester Hairston choir in the summer of 1992. The event was a unity concert organized by the Hairston Clan in Lexington, North Carolina.
Several weekends were spent in rehearsal culminating in a weekend of spiritual wonder when Dr. Hairston lead us in song. He was delighted to lead us, and a wonder to behold.
The years showed on his frame, but the light shown in his eyes when he was on the podium. The energy and drive was awesome. He was a strict, loving taskmaster, and brought forth in those of us up to the task of singing God's glory, a music of the ages.
I can think of no better way to summarize the man on the stage than to quote a title of one of my personal favorites "Lord Ain't Noways Tired". I can't wait to hear the choir he will lead in heaven.
