His Royal Jester

Perspective
Jester Hairston

One of my favorite early sitcom characters was called "Leroy," Leroy was the Kingfish's brother-in-law on the Amos 'N' Andy Show. I didn't know much about the real person, so since this was Black History Month I did some research to find out more about this gentleman. What do you say about a man who has lived almost a century?

One of Hairston's most famous works is his arrangement of "Amen," which was featured in the movie "LILLIES OF THE FIELD." He wrote the song over 70 years ago. Hairston dubbed the song for Sidney Poitier. Poitier won the best acting award for his role. Hairston coached Poitier until he had the movements down to perfection. During the Civil Rights movement the song "Amen" was recorded by Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions, and was celebrated once again. I don't think there are too many baby boomers who aren't familiar with this anthem.

Hairson received the 1,949th star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame at 90 years young. He was then one of the oldest working actors on televsion.(His star is at 6161 West Hollywood Blvd.) He worked on the TV sitcom "AMEN" with Sherman Hemsley and Clifton Davis.

Hairston will celebrate his 99th birthday this year and is still active.Slowed down somewhat, however he can still tell some of the most wonderful stories of his years spent in Hollywood. Hairston is a true living legend and a national treasure. I enjoyed reasearching and learning more about him. This Black History Month and every month I challenge each and everyone to read a book an learn more about some of your heroes and heroines.
